Now isn’t he handsome!!  What self respecting Tree Weta female wouldn’t be gaga over this handsome chappie, as for females of different species...... well the gaga bit might be right but the screams were epic. Saturday 19th A quick summary shall we........ leaf drop has largely stopped, the bark drop, (from the same trees), is in mid process, it’s rained a bit or three and the Bamboo Forest walk is coming along nicely. The parrots, blackbirds, and Tui have mostly finished demolishing the fruit although the Myna and parrots are still decimating the figs and this fact combined with visitors half inching a fig or two means we.... (that is, her that must be obeyed and yours truly, the slave), don’t see so many of them. Now the extra ordinary number of young Tui, and vast quantities of young Blackbirds have finished ravishing the Nashi tree the bulk of them have moved on with just the old timers raiding the figs, so now with the rowdy Tui out of the scene the predominant birdsong is that of the Bellbirds definably more melodious and conducive to aaaaahhhhhhh....... It is also very gratifying to see so many native fish, eels, and fresh water crayfish in the creek, as it tends to define the generally good health of the local streams which can only improve as the forest slowly recovers from the ravages of years gone by.
Terrifying?? (well for some it seems :-)
Friday 25th So the prophesized deluge/s seem over for now with the bulk of it missing the general area with enough to fresh the streams and sog everything else ready for mushroom season yum!! Also to be looked for are the visual treats of a myriad of fungi popping, sliming, lurching and sneaking out of the ground when one’s back is turned, ready to amaze with form and colour as if from nowhere. . Previews of the new walk yet to be opened, or finished for that matter, are getting positive comment and encouragement to keep it simple, the sort of recommendation I like.
