June - July 2017
The shortest, but not coldest day has passed, as has the wind of the east, a most damaging
brew at the best of times. In its place the constantish flow from the SW with attendant
cooler climes and yet the garden seems fooled to some degree with daffodils aflower here
and there, orchid stems appearing and let us not forget to mention the rains that flush and
flurry, even some hail as i write.
The intro image is the view out of the office one recent hopeful morning, just one frame of
a most colourful morning movie that often plays, dawn the start time with no credits to
play, click the image to see a bigger version. The old saying of “Red in the morning
shepherds warning” will have been true as with many mornings not already being rained on
although the details i don’t recall, just endless days splashed with rain in big or little lots
and moss lawns seeming brighter with each download.
Enough of the winter wet woes...... other events have evented such as
- The big push to deal to the Buxus Blight in the Labyrinth, at best a holding measure and
now it’s obvious that a replacement plant species is going to be required, plans are a foot.
- New gravel in the carpark area, the Kauri Pond path, and various points around the place
that have washed away. The Kauri Pond path looks especially swish and remained untouched
is subsequent downpours.
- The Bamboo Forest path has a new entrance, also newly gravelled, and a bamboo arch to
catch the eye and indicate “lookee here, something else to check out”
- The Copper Warriors have migrated to their new abode just in from the start of the bush
walk and the war on rabbits has started.........
More news as the month progresses.
July 31st
Well that went quick, more rain than not, slips everywhere up and down the access roads,
so virtually no visitors. Mainly a time of burning firewood with a little garden maintenance
at least it was warmish enough for everything to grow well and then......
Last 2 days of the month, floor to ceiling frosts, a valley full of whiteness and wilted
plants, bedraggled bananas and frizzled flowers. I was beginning to think that spring really
was here but the plants got it wrong this time it seems.
Mrs B. Blackbird (B for bossy) and Mr B. Blackbird (B for bossed around) were both
hassling us for the garden to be turned over for breakfast, lunch, dinner and anything in
between. Mrs B even took to vocal demands that her needs be met and would flit down to
the nearest most inconvenient spot scolding and demanding.
Even the sculptures were complaining chill.........
