Friday the 30th of September
One might ask what happened to August September? One did and no suitable answer was found just like
last month, Deja vu, just memories of even more soggy days. As for the view well I have been meaning to
get up there for quite a while now. In this part of the world that above is called a “mountain” some of us
would disagree with that assertion. Mountains have lots more barren bits on top (like my head) and turn
white in winter.
So I guess this is to be another summary of a month raced by with the almond pinkness now long gone
and new kernels swelling for another bumper crop of nutiliciousness. An experiment in early potatoes
was started in tubs made from mussel buoys draped with plastic, the plants are now huge and when it
finally stops raining I will start filling the tubs with more soil and semi-rotted mulchings for a bumper
barrel of spuds.
I mentioned last month about opening up the views in some areas and one of these areas coincides with
the setting up of Spudvarna where I would occasionally eyeball the “wastelands” to the southeast, down
the slope a way where it has been slowly reverting to a ruin of the regeneration format, hmmmmm and
thus from these musings “a plan” was hatched and covertly started before presenting for approval to
her that must be obeyed :-) The zone in question is to be a food forest, and yes I got approval, a place
to play and already some trees (bought on special) are amassed(?) for an initial planting.
No bowling green grass and dainty brick edgings here!! just a menagerie of fruit and nut trees, with
understories of the less grandiose edibles and grounded with herbs and tubers, all coexisting in a happy
tangle of self sustainability. At most any work will be some pruning and the slashing of the non edible
into mulch. I will be using a lot of Comfrey for this purpose as well.
So far I have cleared several mini gorse forests and am eyeballing the ivy for destruction next and also
cleared the view towards a magnificent drooping oak of some description, there are just a few more
scrubby treelets to remove. The rest can remain for now and will be slowly planted out with the aim
being to maintain degrees of nicer visuals as the area develops.
On the sculptural front there has been another work created, it is called “Waves of Creativity over
Spans of Time” you can see it below, freshly sculpted and garden mounted.
Other news in brief:
•
Possum pinging season has started.
•
So far a dozen orchid stems open in the Kauri Pond with plenty more to come so there should be
fine displays for many weeks yet.
•
We have been closed this past week due to rain and supreme bogginess, at least that has the
upside of keeping hordes of holidaying school kids and frazzled parents from mobbing the place,
you have to be here to know what I mean........
I will close with a few photos, click to enlarge.
